Pitch the Pots

Learn to Start Seeds Indoors with Soil Blocks!

What?
A workshop with Melissa Post, a 20+ year organic CSA gardener and Chester resident. Melissa is excited to share her unique methods for growing a garden from seed in this hands-on introduction to starting plants indoors with soil blocks.

For Who?
For those with zero seed starting experience, or those with some experience but who want to learn more about the soil blocking technique and sharpen their knowledge of starting garden plants from seed indoors. Limit 10 participants.

Benefits of soil blocking include:

  • Using less (or possibly none at all) single use plastics
  • Creating healthier, more vigorous transplants due to oxygenated, “air-pruned” roots
  • Reducing transplant shock for your seedlings

In addition to the basic principles of growing their own garden plants from seed, participants will learn why they might want to use soil blocks vs traditional plastic cells for seedlings, how to make them (you’ll get your hands dirty!), and how to care for them.

Where?
Erskine’s Grain & Garden, 54 Grain Store Rd., Chester, VT.

When?
Saturday, April 8, 2023 from 1 to 2pm.
Registration deadline: April 1, limit 10 participants.

How Much?
$50. This includes: 1 hour workshop plus a heavy duty, USA made, reusable seed starting tray and mesh insert for holding your soil blocks, plus the opportunity to fill the tray with soil blocks and seeds to take home (50 x 2” blocks!)

Equipment provided:

  • Heavy Duty tray to hold soil blocks (to keep).
  • Soil & amendments (to keep).
  • Soil blocker tools to form soil blocks. If you’d like to purchase one prior to or following the workshop, please enjoy a 25% discount. We stock, and will be using, a Ladbrooke 4 cell hand held 2” soil blocker.
  • A variety of seeds appropriate for starting indoors in soil blocks!

Participants may choose to bring gardening gloves, their own seeds and/or a pencil and notebook.

Please call 802-875-2333 or stop in the store to register. $50 workshop fee paid in full is required to secure reservation.
